Interpreter/Translator for the Deaf (6680)

CLASS CONCEPT

The Interpreter/Translator for the Deaf provides a communication link between 
the deaf student and the instructor by transmitting classroom lectures and 
other spoken materials in dactylology, employing simultaneous delivery skills 
word for word (Signed English) or by rephrasing (American Sign Language); 
employs reverse voice interpretation skills to enable the deaf student to 
participate in classroom discussions; is available for interpreting during 
the student's appointments with faculty; may instruct faculty and staff 
members to assist them in dealing with the deaf student; may establish special 
signs in collaboration with the student in scientific/technical areas involving 
words for which there are no signs other than alphabetical or fingerspelling; 
may provide explanatory or additional interpretation on request; and may in 
addition perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school and 60 semester units or 1200 hours of 
postsecondary interpreting experience, proficiency in American Sign Language 
and Signed English; and knowledge of the ethics of the Registry of 
Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Ethics; or an equivalent combination of 
education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the 
successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
