SERIES CONCEPT

Storekeepers manage, supervise, or perform a variety of tasks in ordering,
receiving, storing, accounting for, distributing, shipping, and issuing
equipment, apparatus, materials, and supplies; and perform other related
duties as required.

Incumbents are typically employed in a central receiving, central stores, or
departmental stores facility. Incumbents may be involved in the complete
range of stores or receiving functions or may specialize in one of the major
functions as mentioned above. The Storekeeper Series consists of six levels.
Assistant Storekeeper is the entry level. Storekeeper is the operational
level. Stores Worker is the operational level requiring operation of powered
materials handling equipment. Senior Storekeeper is the advanced operational
or working supervisory level. Stores Supervisor is the full supervisory
level,
and Senior Stores Supervisor is the first managerial level. Duties and
responsibilities at higher levels than those specified in this series would
warrant consideration for the Management Services Officer series. Annual cost
of goods in this Series shall mean the total value of goods issued during the
year.

CLASS CONCEPTS

Senior Stores Supervisor

Under general direction, incumbents have responsibility for management of a
stores facility or a major division in a large stores facility having an
annual cost of goods ranging from $600,000 to $1,000,000 (calculated at the
wholesale price index of 152.7). Senior Stores Supervisors plan budgetary
needs and determine appropriate stock control methods and operating policies
and procedures. Incumbents also plan, organize and direct the following
functions: space and staffing requirements, stock selection and procurement,
customer service, customer and vendor relations, planned purchasing
coordination, and inventory management.

Incumbents in charge of a central receiving section are responsible for
receiving, inspecting, and delivering shipments totaling 85,000 per year; and
traffic control, customer service and freight bill payment. On those campuses
where central receiving performs an inspection of the shipment requiring
direct payment of the invoice without departmental approval, the annual volume
of shipments required should be reduced by 25% because of the increased
responsibility of approving shipments without departmental approval.

Incumbents responsible for management of both a stores facility and a central
receiving section have an annual cost of goods of $300,000 or more (calculated
at the wholesale price index of 152.7) and shipments totaling 30,000 per year.

Stores Supervisor

Under direction, incumbents have responsibility for the operation and
supervision of a stores facility or a major section in a facility having
annual cost of goods ranging from $250,000 to $600,000 (calculated at the
wholesale price index of 152.7). Stores Supervisors plan budgetary needs, and
determine appropriate stock control methods and operating policies and
procedures. Incumbents also plan, organize, and direct the following functions:
space and staffing requirements, stock selection and procurement, customer
service, customer and vendor relations, planned purchasing coordination, and
inventory management.

Incumbents in charge of a central receiving section or a major unit in a large
central receiving section are responsible for receiving, inspecting, and
delivering shipments totaling 50,000 per year; and traffic management,
customer service, and customer and vendor relations. On those campuses where
central receiving performs an inspection of the shipment requiring direct
payment of the invoice without departmental approval, the annual volume of
shipments required should be reduced by 25% because of the increased
responsibility of approving shipments without departmental approval.

Senior Storekeeper

Under general supervision, incumbents are responsible for the operation of
a stores facility or division having an annual cost of goods of less than
$250,000 (calculated at the wholesale price index of 152.7) and an inventory
exceeding $50,000; may supervise other Storekeepers; and are responsible for
work of greater complexity and responsibility (e.g., stock selection, space
planning, etc.) than that found at the operational level as evidenced by need
for technical experience and/or training.

Incumbents in charge of a central receiving section are responsible for
receiving, inspecting, and delivering shipments totaling fewer than 50,000 per
year, and traffic control. On those campuses where central receiving performs
an inspection of the shipment requiring direct payment of the invoice without
departmental approval, the annual volume of shipments required should be
reduced by 25% because of the increased responsibility of approving shipments
without departmental approval.

Stores Worker

Under supervision, Stores Workers perform operational duties in the receipt,
Storage, and issue of material and use powered or non-powered materials-
handling equipment as required.

Incumbents typically load and unload trucks or other common carriers and
transport material to specified areas either by hand or by use of powered or
non-powered materials-handling equipment; assist in the unpacking and checking
of incoming material against invoices or bills of lading to verify items and
quantities received; palletize and move material to designated locations; and
select specified items and assemble material in shipping bays. The Stores
Worker class is distinguished from the Storekeeper class in that incumbents
are required to operate forklift trucks and/or other powered materials-
handling equipment which require special skills in the palletizing or handling
of materials and/or supplies.

Storekeeper

Under supervision, incumbents operate a departmental stores facility or work
in a large stores operation providing service to grants, contracts and
projects; perform operational duties in ordering, receiving, storing,
inventory, issuing, distributing, shipping and record keeping; determine stock
items and stock levels; locate and order non-stock items and equipment parts;
prepare and expedite orders; inspect items received; handle freight claims,
quantity shortages, breakage, duplicate shipments, and back orders; advise
coworkers of procedures or methods of handling claims for damage, quantity
shortages, duplicate shipments, back orders, returned goods, inventory
shortages, and other stores procedures. Incumbents may specialize in one or
more stores activities, or have responsibility for a complete stores facility
handling a limited variety of materials.

Assistant Storekeeper

Under close supervision, incumbents perform manual duties in receiving,
storing, issuing, distributing, shipping, and inventory of supplies,
materials, equipment and apparatus; assist in receipt of goods by unloading,
moving and counting packages, drums, crates, or other containers or items;
check for obvious damage; and log in goods received.

Delivery Worker

Under supervision, incumbents perform manual duties in the loading, unloading,
and delivery of supplies; and perform other related duties as required.

Typically incumbents ride on vendor trucks and direct drivers to delivery
points for goods shipped to the campus, or ride with University truck drivers
to assist in the delivery of large orders; and may be required to drive
delivery trucks.

Delivery Workers unpack small furniture, boxes, and other equipment; pick up
items from local vendors; and may sign vendor's receipt of shipment received.
