SERIES CONCEPT

Fire and Security Systems Technicians performs a variety of duties such as installation, maintenance, testing and repair of large institutional fire alarm systems, card access systems, intrusion alarm systems, computer network systems, central station monitoring   and energy monitoring systems.  Technicians maintain operational standards and functions as per manufacturer specifications and all regulatory guidelines.  Performs testing of all low-voltage devices connected to fire and life safety systems per all regulatory agencies.

Incumbents are familiar with, but not limited to, system administration duties of some or all of the following, Windows 2000 network operating system, databases and multiple software applications that operate fire alarm systems, intrusion alarm systems, card access systems, central station monitoring and energy monitoring systems.

CLASS CONCEPTS

Fire and Security Systems Supervisor

Under direction, incumbents supervise and coordinate the work of Assistant Supervisors and Fire and Security Systems Technicians.  The incumbent makes hiring selections, insure that new and existing staff receive proper training, assigns, schedules and directs technicians in the installation, maintenance, testing and repair of fire alarm systems, intrusion alarm systems, computer network systems, energy monitoring systems, central monitoring systems and card access systems.  Performs all administrative duties necessary to manage department workload and assignments, maintain appropriate record keeping of materials and submit time cards for accurate labor charges.  Evaluates employee performance and determines standards for performance.

Fire and Security Systems Assistant Supervisor

Under general supervision, incumbents assist the supervisor in the duties of assigning, scheduling and directing technicians in the installation, maintenance, testing and repair of fire alarm systems, intrusion alarm systems, computer network systems, energy monitoring systems, central station monitoring and card access systems.  Incumbent assists supervisor in managing department workload and assignments.  Maintains appropriate record keeping of materials and submits time cards for accurate labor charges.

Fire and Security Systems Technician

Under supervision, incumbents perform operational level duties in the installation, maintenance, testing and repair of fire alarm systems, card access systems, intrusion alarm systems, computer network systems, central station monitoring and energy monitoring systems.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of an electronic trade school program or journeyman apprenticeship program with a minimum of four years related work experience.  Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations; knowledge of local and national fire protection codes; ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics and one line diagrams; knowledge of institutional fire alarm, intrusion alarm, card access and building automation systems; ability to use electronic test equipment; knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
