------------------------------------------------------------------ Painter UCI Series Concepts Class Specifications - G.25 Painting Supervisor - 8104 Assistant Supervisor - Painter - 8103 Lead Painter - 8105 Painter - 8106 June, 1992 ****************************************************************** SERIES CONCEPT Painters apply coats of paint, varnish, stains, enamel or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixtures of buildings and other related structures; smooth surfaces using sandpaper, brushes or steel wool and remove old paint using paint remover, scrapers or wire brushes to prepare surfaces for painting; fill nail holes, cracks and joints with putty, plaster or other filler; select premixed paints or prepare paints to match specified colors by mixing portions of pigment, oil and thinning and drying substances; paint surfaces using brushes, spray guns or rollers; design, layout, engrave lettering and graphics using automated and manual sign making equipment to make signs and related items for application on surfaces such as metal, wood, glass, oil cloth, poster board, directories and vehicles. May cover interior walls and ceiling of offices and related facilities with decorative wall paper or fabrics; and instruct or lead semi-skilled or unskilled assistants. CLASS CONCEPTS Painting Supervisor Under direction, incumbents supervise and coordinate the work of Assistant Supervisors, Lead Painters, and Painters. Incumbents typically make hiring selections among job applicants, insure that new and existing staff receive proper training; make daily work schedules and assignments; review work performed at various stages and upon completion; evaluate the performance of subordinate employees; recommend or initiate personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, and disciplinary measures; and maintain various work records including written and oral reports; prepare estimates of workhours, costs and materials required. Assistant Supervisor - Painter under general supervision, incumbents serve as working supervisors for a specific work crew of painters and helpers within the shop (e.g., construction crew) which may be carrying out work assignments at a number of jobs. The assigned responsibility for the supervision of different work crews within the shop may change frequently depending upon changing work priorities. Incumbents also assist the Supervisor in establishing daily job schedules; insure that decisions made regarding these priorities are carried out; assist the Supervisor in evaluating job performance and may recommend on disciplinary actions as necessary; may assist the Supervisor with job estimating. Incumbents act for the Supervisors in their absence. Lead Painter Under supervision, incumbents serve as work leaders for one or two painters and helpers assigned to a specific job. Incumbents give instructions to carry out assigned tasks; may make minor changes in material needs or modifications to assigned work due to material delays or other problems; communicate work order revisions; material delays or other problems to Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor; await further instruction; maintain time and materiel records and perform the full range of job duties as outlined in the series concept. Painter Under supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties as outlined in the series concept. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Applicants for positions in the Painter Series are expected to possess the skills, knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Positions allocated to the Supervisory titles must meet the criteria for supervision as defined in the Supplemental Guidelines for Supervisory classes (SAM 12).
