SERIES CONCEPT
Medical Assistants provide non-licensed medical support to medical care
providers in an outpatient setting. Assist in taking vital signs and in
initial assessment. May participate in the evaluation and formulation
of patient care. Assist in examinations as
directed. Apply bandages and other appliances, collect
specimens and administer medication and first aid. Provide
treatments and procedures as assigned and with the scope of skills and
knowledge. Typical functions are injections, blood draws, EKG
tests, skin tests, and perform other tests not requiring highly
specialized skills or licenses. Set up exam rooms and
sterilize equipment.
Complete medical chart. Act as a liaison with patient and
doctor. Coordinate with other clinical team members in
delivery of recommendations of other team members. Receive
and record lab and other test results and, when appropriate, relay
results to patient.
Depending on the needs of the clinical office, may be assigned to
perform both "front" and "back" office duties or be assigned a narrow
range of specific Medical Assistant duties. Performs clerical
functions associated with the operations of a clinical office.
CLASS CONCEPTS
Medical Assistant I
Positions at this level provide the full range of duties as described
above. Incumbents may also provide front office services on a back-up
basis.
Medical Assistant II
Positions at this level provide the full range of duties as described
above. Incumbents also (1) provide one or more front office
services on a regular and routine basis, and/or (2) serve as a lead (or
supervisor) for a group of medical assistants.
Per Diem Medical Assistant II
Positions in this title perform work similar to that at the Medical
Assistant II level.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must have written evidence to validate training and competency as a
medical assistant (i.e., certification of completion of a medical
assistant training program, or a letter from supervising
physician/podiatrist). To administer injections or provide
venipuncture, must have written evidence of validation for training and
competence in medication administration by injecting and skin testing.
The Medical Assistant series recognizes supervisory responsibility at
the Medical Assistant II level. Positions allocated to the supervisory
title must meet the criteria for supervision as defined in the
Supplemental Guidelines for Supervisor Classes (SAM 12).
