CLASS CONCEPT

Under the close supervision of a licensed Clinical Laboratory 
Technologist incumbents perform a variety of routine tests in a 
clinical laboratory in a training capacity, and participate concurrently 
in a formal program of instruction.  The work and instruction should meet 
the requirements of the California State Board of Public Health 
apprenticeship program which qualifies the incumbent to take the State 
examination for the Clinical Laboratory Technologist license.  Incumbents 
may in addition perform other related duties as required.

Incumbents typically perform general clinical laboratory work in 
bacteriology, serology, hematology, and biochemistry; make 
bacteriological analyses of specimens to determine presence of 
communicable diseases; make chemical determinations of blood and urine; 
make and examine cultures; prepare culture media, stains, reagents and 
stock solutions; take blood counts; and determine blood types.

                      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from college with a major in an appropriate scientific field; 
possession of a Clinical Laboratory Technologist Trainee's license 
issued by the State of California; or an equivalent combination of 
education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the 
successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
