SERIES CONCEPT
The Administrative Nurse series reflects the direct and active
involvement of incumbents in determining the nature of the management
system necessary to support the client-centered clinical focus of
nursing and to contribute to the comprehensive health care of people.
The series includes positions which require knowledge and skills in
decision-making; management systems; leadership styles; fiscal
management; and social, political, and professional trends in
combination with specialization in nursing practice. The objective of
the series is to establish career patterns which provide for
professional growth in the executive leadership necessary for the
delivery of quality nursing within the University system. The series
describes positions in a variety of health care settings within the
University system. The series consists of five levels of responsibility
ranging from I through V, exclusive of the positions of Director of
Nursing Services, when such positions are allocated to the University
Management Program.
The factors used as a basis for classification determination reflect the
level of administrative and leadership requirements, the complexity and
scope of assignment, and the accountability and responsibility for the
quality of patient care and nursing practice.
CLASS CONCEPTS
Administrative Nurse V
Under general direction, incumbents are assigned responsibility for the
management of a nursing service or a major departmental component. The
management functions include but are not limited to long-range planning,
budget administration, personnel management, and resource allocation.
Administrative Nurse IV
Under general direction, incumbents are assigned responsibility for the
management of a major service(s), project(s), or patient care unit(s).
Administrative Nurse IV's apply management principles to effect nursing
practice which supports and enhances the processes of education and
research.
Administrative Nurse III
Under general supervision, incumbents are assigned administrative
responsibility for a defined clinical area during the entire period of
its operation. Administrative Nurse III's work with increasing
independence in applying clinical judgment, management concepts, and
providing counseling.
Administrative Nurse II
Under general supervision, incumbents work with a greater degree of
independence in applying concepts derived from management and
communication theory. Administrative Nurse II's utilize nursing
knowledge to support clinical nursing practice.
Administrative Nurse I
Under supervision, incumbents utilize theoretical management concepts
and leadership skills in a defined area of assigned administrative
responsibility. This is the entry level into the administrative nurse
series.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Administrative Nurse V
Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse
as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing. A
Baccalaureate degree in Nursing and four years of clinical experience,
three of which have had an administrative component; or a Master's
degree in Nursing or a relevant discipline and three years of clinical
experience, two of which have had an administrative component; or a
Doctorate in Nursing or relevant discipline; or an equivalent
combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities
essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the
position.
Administrative Nurse IV
Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse
as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing. A
Baccalaureate degree in Nursing and three years of clinical experience,
two of which have had an administrative component; or a Master's degree
in Nursing or a relevant discipline and two years of clinical
experience, one of which has had an administrative component; or an
equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and
abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned
to the position.
Administrative Nurse III
Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse
as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing. A Diploma
or Associate degree and three years of clinical experience, two of which
have had an administrative component; or a Baccalaureate degree in
Nursing and two years of clinical experience, one of which has had an
administrative component; or a Master's degree in Nursing and one year
of clinical experience, six months of which have had an administrative
component; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and
knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the
duties assigned to the position.
Administrative Nurse II
Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse
as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing. A Diploma
or Associate degree and two years of clinical experience; or a
Baccalaureate degree in Nursing and one year of clinical experience; or
a Masters degree in Nursing and six months of clinical experience; or an
equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and
abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned
to the position.
Administrative Nurse I
Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse
as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing and six
months of clinical experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to
the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
