------------------------------------------------------------------ Perfusionist UCI Series Concepts Class Specifications - H.45 Senior Perfusionist - 9027 Perfusionist - 9028 Assistant Perfusionist - 9029 December, 1980 ****************************************************************** SERIES CONCEPT Perfusionists perform duties associated with the operation of heart-lung and other equipment during all cases requiring cardiopulmonary by-pass. Incumbents assemble and operate heart-lung machines under sterile conditions; assemble, calibrate and operate blood pressure, electrocardiographic and electroencephalographic equipment, operate and maintain related equipment (included as examples, but not intended to be limiting, are Intra-Aortic Balloon pump, auto transfusion systems, Haemonetics Cell Saver, Pacemaker analyzing systems); perform maintenance on heart-lung machines and related equipment which may include siliconizing, calibration and replacement of defective components; and assist in the procurement of perfusion equipment. Incumbents may be assigned responsibility for equipment inventory and maintenance records; may participate in clinical research activities involving testing and use of new techniques and organ perfusion equipment such as pumps, oxygenators and heat exchangers; may participate in formal technician training programs; may direct the work of other Perfusionists including trainees; and may assist in the recruitment and selection of Perfusionists. The series consists of three levels; entry, operational and lead/advanced operational. The distinction between levels is based on the degree of supervision exercised over the position and the assignment of lead responsibilities. CLASS CONCEPTS Senior Perfusionist Under general supervision, incumbents assign and direct the work of Perfusionists and trainees, participate in equipment evaluation and procurement; maintain records pertaining to equipment use and maintenance; participate in research programs involving testing, and evaluation of experimental techniques and equipment; participate in formal training programs; and perform the normal range of duties outlined in the series concept. This is the lead/advanced operational level of the series. Perfusionist Under supervision incumbents perform the range of clinical duties outlined in the series concept. This is the operational level of the series where the majority of positions are allocated. Assistant Perfusionist Under close supervision incumbents assist in the performance of clinical duties outlined in the series concept, but typically are not assigned research or training responsibilities. This is the entry level of the series. Incumbents are normally expected to advance to the operational level of the series. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Incumbents for positions in the Perfusionist series are expected to have experience in the operation of heart-lung and other equipment required for cardiopulmonary bypass cases; and to possess the skills, knowledges, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the positions. NOTE: Specific qualification requirements are defined for positions by the appropriate user departments. ******************************************************************
