For clinical application, Histotechnologists prepare tissue specimens for examination by pathologists. Incumbents fix, embed, cut, and stain tissues such as skin, bone, kidney, blood vessels, lymph nodes, bone marrow and eye; apply special tissue and other preparations, and special staining techniques required by diagnostic procedures. Histotechnologists prepare solutions and stains, maintain laboratory and equipment, keep records of work processed, troubleshoot minor technical and equipment problems, perform quality control procedures, evaluate results, and perform other related duties as assigned.
CLASS CONCEPTS
Supervising Histotechnologist
Under general direction, incumbents are assigned technical responsibility for a group of Histotechnologists. Incumbents typically perform duties that include conducting interviews for hiring, orienting new employees, assigning work schedules, and directing the work of Histotechnologist IIs and IIIs. Incumbents determine that work is completed and reported, monitor the quality control procedures in compliance with departmental policies; monitoring problems relating to performance, scheduling, procedures, equipment, supplies, or other daily activities., Incumbents keep subordinates apprised of procedural and policy changes, completing performance appraisals, and initiating corrective action as appropriate.
Incumbents may perform operational and advanced duties as required and are assigned responsibility for the budget and laboratory safety.
Histotechnologist III
Under direction, incumbents perform the most difficult tissue preparation assignments, which require highly specialized techniques, and serve as lead technical expert in lab operations. Incumbents provide leadership in development of new and modified lab techniques.
Histotechnologist II
Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties as outlined in the series concept including preparation assignments requiring routine and special fixing, embedding, cutting, and staining techniques on all tissue types.
Histotechnologist I
Under supervision, incumbents perform a limited range of Histotechnologist’s duties, including embedding, cutting, record keeping, and equipment maintenance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants and incumbents are expected to possess the skills, knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of duties assigned to the position.
