CLASS CONCEPT
Power Sewing Machine Operator
Under general supervision, Power Sewing Machine Operators make and repair
cloth articles in a linen service sewing unit; and perform other related
duties as required.
Incumbents typically cut and sew cloth articles such as smocks, surgical
drapes, gowns, towels, glove cases and sacks; alter and mend garments,
uniforms and linens; saw on buttons; make and repair buttonholes; operate
electric sewing machines, cutlers and related sewing and mending equipment;
maintain equipment and supplies; may stamp and mark linen; and may maintain
records on work performed.
The Power Sewing Machine operator class is distinguished from the Drapery
Maker class in that Incumbents perform skilled tasks involving the machining
and/or hand sewing of clothing and linens.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to read, write, perform basic arithmetic calculations, follow oral
and written instructions, and one year of experience in a laundry or related
linen service operation; or an equivalent combination of education and
experience.
