SERIES CONCEPT
Hospital Unit Service Coordinators perform or direct work which requires
special training in and knowledge of hospital patient service functions;
and perform other related duties as assigned.
Incumbents coordinate with other hospital departments such as Operating
Room, Radiology, Clinical Laboratories, Admissions and Central Services
in the sending and receiving of patients as well as equipment, specimens
and related items; transcribe orders from the doctor's order form in the
clinical record to the appropriate filing system; obtain required
evaluations and counter signatures of a registered nurse; and
requisition medications, special services and materials required for the
patient or an appropriate nursing care unit; maintain complete patient
records, total patients' 24 hour intake and output records; review
transcriptions and other recorded dates for accuracy and correctness;
and aid in establishing and maintaining a courteous receptive atmosphere
for patients, public and other unit employees.
Classes in this series are distinguished from classes in the
Clerical/Administrative series by the performance or supervision of
tasks in a patient nursing care unit which requires an understanding of
the functions of various hospital departments as well as specialized
types of surgeries, medical diagnoses and disease entities.
The series consists of three levels. Hospital Unit Service Coordinator I
is the entry/trainee level; Hospital Unit Service Coordinator II is the
operational level; and Hospital Unit Service Coordinator III is the
advanced operational level.
CLASS CONCEPTS
Hospital Unit Service Coordinator III
Under general supervision, incumbents perform difficult unit service
coordinating duties which require extensive hospital patient care
experience and judgment and the ability to determine the appropriate
action from within a frame work of broad and complex guidelines.
Incumbents typically transcribe physicians' orders and medications
ordered to the appropriate record and are responsible for assuring that
proper authorizations and complete and accurate records are maintained;
and requisition and coordinate special services and materials from
various departments. Incumbents may in addition train or direct the work
of lower level Hospital Unit Service Coordinators.
Hospital Unit Service Coordinator II
Under supervision and in conformity with a variety of patient care
guidelines, incumbents perform the range of duties as outlined in the
Series Concept. Incumbents typically schedule appointments; maintain
complete patient records by assuring that all necessary forms are
entered in file in appropriate places; secure and merge previous patient
records as needed; and forward forms for support services to appropriate
departments at specified times. Incumbents great new patients, give
information to the public and employees, answer the telephone page and
relay accurate messages to doctors, nurses or other staff members as
appropriate.
Hospital Unit Service Coordinator I
Under close supervision, incumbents perform a variety of routine duties.
This level may be used as a trainee level for an incumbent who is
gaining training and experience necessary for advancement to the
Hospital Unit Service Coordinator II level.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Hospital Unit Service Coordinator III
Graduation from high school and three years of related hospital
experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Hospital Unit Service Coordinator II
Graduation from high school and two years of hospital related
experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Hospital Unit Service Coordinator I
Graduation from high school; or an equivalent combination of education
and experience.
